The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) represents nearly 400,000 working men and women across the United States and Canada. Members of the IUOE are primarily operating engineers, who work as heavy equipment and crane operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes, as well as a number of job classifications in the petrochemical industry.

Our Apprentices learn skills that can be used throughout their careers. Today’s ambitious Apprentices can become the Supervisors, Estimators, Superintendents, and Contractors of tomorrow.

Operating Engineers and Other Construction Equipment Operators

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.

Apprentices are employed through the union hiring hall and dispatched to work according to the union referral system.

PROGRAM INFORMATION:
• 4-year course
• 576 hours of related instruction.
• 5000 hours of on-the-job training, where wages are paid.

Admissions

   Physically able to operate machinery or lift heavy objects

BASIC APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS:
• Applicant must be 18 years of age.
• Show proof of a Birth Certificate.
• Have a High School Diploma or GED.
• Be able to show a negative Drug Screening.
• Have a VALID Louisiana Driver’s License.
 

All documents will be required for acceptance on Application Day, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

Application Process • Please fill out the application and email it back to hpierce@iuoelocal406.org. • March 31st, 2023 is the deadline to send in any applications. • Beginning in April, we will mail all applicants letters inviting you to Application Day. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE YOUR LETTER BY MAY PLEASE CALL 985-542-4322!!!!!!!!! • Application Day will include bringing correct documents and taking an aptitude test. • Interview Day will consist of interviews with our contractors and business agents. • Indenture Day will consist of reviewing information needed to begin the program.
